It seems like I worked my ass of jus' ta get back into the Tojo Clan. I mean, it must've fuckin' happened I think the Sotenbori stuff was earlier, so.

[ earlier than his memories with kiryu. pre-snakeskin jacket. ]

Right.

[ It must have been before... Kiryu can't remember when they first met, but Majima feels so reliably Yakuza in his memories that Kiryu can't picture knowing him when he was anything but. ]

At least it paid off, right? You got in, had your giant family.

[ And then got killed but you know... that's how their stories end?? ]

Got back in, had the family an' then left until ya convinced me ta come back. But it wasn't -- I don't think I wanted those things.

Which things? The family?

[ Did you ever want anything for yourself and not for Saejima? That's the real question, Majima. ]

[ literally no ]

Yeah. I wanted it for Saejima.

[ he says his name slowly, like he's still getting used to it. his first time saying his name out loud but it feels like he's said it so many times before. ]

I knew he'd come back, an' I'd give it all to him.

Saejima... your kyoudai.

[ It's obvious by the way he says it. This was a man who mattered deeply to Majima. It's no surprise to hear that reverence in his voice. ]

He wanted to climb the ranks, not you?

I think so. But when he came back, he didn't want ta kill me.

[ there's a weird, almost disappointed note to the way he says it. that's definitely fine. ]

An' later he musta decided ta go back to jail, anyway.

[ Yikes, Majima. Yikes. ]

That's weird... why would he do that?

[ The going back to jail part. Not the wanting to kill Majima part. ]

Mm, it made sense the way he put it.

[ the way majima says it, it sounds like anything saejima could've said to him would have made sense. there's an absolute reverence to it. he's having a hard time hiding his feelings for this guy, if that was his intent. ]

It's kinda weird ta explain. But he said we were like tripe. An' tripe, ya gotta cook it 'til it's nice an' burnt, otherwise it's jus' trash.

[ Kiryu's not a jealous guy, it's okay. He can tell Saejima was important to him-- they were oath brothers, after all. ]

Like... tripe?

[ Saejima, your wisdom works in mysterious ways. Kiryu doesn't want to be disrespectful, obviously. ]

So was his going back to jail the getting cooked part?

[ majima nods, clearly relieved that kiryu understands him ]

That's right.

[ Kiryu nods. He's not a fan of tripe, but he can kind of see the metaphor. ]

So he didn't feel like it was enough? The time he spent in jail?

Yeah, I guess so. He wanted ta finish it out.

[ Kiryu nods. He can't imagine what kind of person this Saejima guy was, but he must have had his own reasons for doing what he did. ]

He must've been a really honorable guy.
