[ That sounds awful, especially with how both of them have family in jail. Kiryu can't imagine how horrible that must feel-- for all that seeing his apartment go up in flames hurt, and made him check every smoke detector in his house, that was at least a concrete problem. This is not. (And yeah, these idiots always seem to think everyone else has it worse than them...) ]

That's awful. Do you remember why? Was it a mistake?

[ Makoto's mom usually makes miso soup, but then they don't exactly eat sushi very often. ]

[ ok someone eventually comes and takes the order for the soup and the sushi he marked down and majima gets some tea and they're set. ]

How's work goin'? They treatin' ya any better?

Yeah, I'm doing a lot better, actually. I've helped close a lot of sales in the last two weeks, so things are looking good.

[ Who knew a change in attitude could help so much? ]

Oh, man, yeah... That week was awful. [ He looks down at his hands, taking the chance to grab some chopsticks while he frowns a bit. ] I managed to pull through thanks to that RC car I got off Amazon, but everyone's numbers really tanked... How did you guys work it out back then?

We bought doll furniture -- me 'n Tuuri, we went on a whole adventure and it ended up workin' out pretty well.

Have you ever been to Japan? I can't remember if you've told me before.

Yeah, I went a few times as a kid. But I was really young, I don't remember too much of it.

Was that back when Makoto use to live there?

Yeah, we flew over to visit my mom's side of the family.

[ He smiles. The memories are fuzzy, but they're there and they're sweet. ]

Makoto was just starting to learn English and I didn't speak any Japanese so we came up with a bunch of silly codewords and stuff. He followed me everywhere.
