[ Majima, if you don't know either, don't gang up on her!!! ]
Uh.
[ "The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" is probably going to be the only thing she takes away from high school science, but knowing the phrase doesn't mean she knows what it means. Her pencil hovers above A for a moment, slides down to B... C? ]
This is a trick question, right? Don't cells need all this stuff to function?
[ it's okay guys, Kiryu still loves you even if you don't know that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. ]
Well, carbon dioxide and nitrogen aren't used by mitochondria. I don't think nitrogen is used in cells, and carbon dioxide is usually released by cells, it doesn't get used. That's why we get sick if we breathe in too much smoke.
[ He really is trying to explain it so she'll learn... ]
So your choices are DNA and ATP. DNA is kind of like... the instruction manual for the cell, so that leaves...?
[ honestly majima doesn't even know what a mitochondria is but guess what he's not in high school and he doesn't have to do this homework!! tough luck, mafuyu
anyways kiryu is leading her to the answer so hes just gonna let her try and give it.
please follow his logic, mafuyu. do your dads proud]
[ It's not so much logic as much as Kaz shoots down all other possible choices, so it's just ATP left that Mafuyu circles. The reasoning is long and complicated so she'll just remember "mitochondria = ATP" and use that for all questions.
She'll probably defer to Kaz like this for the rest of the homework, her reading the question out loud and Kaz doing all the thinking for her while she circles whatever answer is left over... but they get through it, fast forward thirty questions and two hours later. She cannot, in fact, get partial credit on the paper, and who knows if there are any ice cream places open this late anymore, but they got through it...! ]
[ Oh, Mafuyu... if you learned only that ATP is the thing mitochondria use then that's a win in Kaz's book. He's patient and attentive with her, working through each answer in a way he hopes she understands. He doesn't even notice how long it's been until they put the homework away and he looks at the clock. It's definitely way later than they intended and they should probably be putting Mafuyu to sleep, but they promised her ice cream and Kaz was really looking forward to it too. ]
Crap, it's late... We can always buy some pints of Ben & Jerry's at the convenience store down the street.
[ YES!!! Ice cream, here they come. Mafuyu leaves her papers right there on the table as she jumps to her feet, grabs her shoes and flings open the door. ]
[ It's close enough to an ice cream date that Kaz will take it. Their weird family outing can move to the convenience store as Kaz grabs his keys and makes his way out for them to follow. ]
Ok. Cookie dough, and I'll have Cherry Garcia. What flavor do you want, Majima?
[ Mafuyu complies, shuffling down the street behind them, but she
makes this face the entire time they walk, I don't know when I will ever get to use such a genuinely sad and disappointed icon but now they have to deal with it. ]
[ N-no, Mafuyu.... not the face... Kiryu's ultimate weakness is the suffering of children. HE'S SO WEAK!! By the time they get to the convenience store he can't take it anymore. ]
You can buy an extra candy bar if you want, Mafuyu. My treat.
[ He loves his precious family so much, okay. This is the cutest... He's not even going to interrupt them despite picking up their ice creams and tossing them in a little basket, nope. You guys can keep being cute. Kaz is living his dreams. ]
[ honestly majima isn't really that upset. this is the kind of shit he pulled with his brother all the time -- although he does try to get his ponytail from her grasp. ]
[ This is playing dirty: Mafuyu drops off Majima's back, grabs a pack of peanut butter cups from the candy stand next to the register line, and slams it into Kaz's basket. ]
[ He's just going to awkwardly shuffle toward the register and try not to get drawn into this because it's cute and he doesn't want to ruin it!! He will offer her some advice, though. ]

Uh, Mafuyu... the white blood cells are the ones that fight infection.
[ She definitely doesn't go to class. Or watch The Magic Schoolbus like tiny Kaz did. Kiryu shakes his head, continuing on. ]
Well, the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. Which of those is used in order for the cell to function?

Yeah, which one is needed to function?

[ he has to consider this for a moment ]
Strawberry. You guys ready to go?

[ BUT IT'S OKAY. Mafuyu will still steal a bite of each and then dig into her salmonella cookie dough ice cream. ]
I'm ready! Kaz, gimme the keys!
[ let me drive ]

[ He loves you and all, but you ain't driving his car, Mafuyu. ]

[ he bends so easily to children....not that majima is any better, tbh ]
Anyways, I already gave her a deal if she wants to drive my car. She just doesn't remember.

[ she did, in fact, forget. the pizza was too good. ]
What was the deal?

He'll just grab the ice cream while they're going on about that. ]

[ until then too bad!!! ]
