Well, carbon dioxide and nitrogen aren't used by mitochondria. I don't think nitrogen is used in cells, and carbon dioxide is usually released by cells, it doesn't get used. That's why we get sick if we breathe in too much smoke.

[ It's not so much logic as much as Kaz shoots down all other possible choices, so it's just ATP left that Mafuyu circles. The reasoning is long and complicated so she'll just remember "mitochondria = ATP" and use that for all questions.

She'll probably defer to Kaz like this for the rest of the homework, her reading the question out loud and Kaz doing all the thinking for her while she circles whatever answer is left over... but they get through it, fast forward thirty questions and two hours later. She cannot, in fact, get partial credit on the paper, and who knows if there are any ice cream places open this late anymore, but they got through it...! ]

[ Oh, Mafuyu... if you learned only that ATP is the thing mitochondria use then that's a win in Kaz's book. He's patient and attentive with her, working through each answer in a way he hopes she understands. He doesn't even notice how long it's been until they put the homework away and he looks at the clock. It's definitely way later than they intended and they should probably be putting Mafuyu to sleep, but they promised her ice cream and Kaz was really looking forward to it too. ]

Crap, it's late... We can always buy some pints of Ben & Jerry's at the convenience store down the street.
