Sometimes I go to Takumi's place to eat— his family has this sushi restaurant— and he teaches me a little. It's easier if I just leave stuff there.

Viruses need to infect things to multiply. Bacteria and other cells can do it on their own. That's the biggest difference.

[ She definitely doesn't go to class. Or watch The Magic Schoolbus like tiny Kaz did. Kiryu shakes his head, continuing on. ]

[ "The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" is probably going to be the only thing she takes away from high school science, but knowing the phrase doesn't mean she knows what it means. Her pencil hovers above A for a moment, slides down to B... C? ]

This is a trick question, right? Don't cells need all this stuff to function?

Well, carbon dioxide and nitrogen aren't used by mitochondria. I don't think nitrogen is used in cells, and carbon dioxide is usually released by cells, it doesn't get used. That's why we get sick if we breathe in too much smoke.

[ He really is trying to explain it so she'll learn... ]

So your choices are DNA and ATP. DNA is kind of like... the instruction manual for the cell, so that leaves...?

[ honestly majima doesn't even know what a mitochondria is but guess what he's not in high school and he doesn't have to do this homework!! tough luck, mafuyu

anyways kiryu is leading her to the answer so hes just gonna let her try and give it.

[ It's not so much logic as much as Kaz shoots down all other possible choices, so it's just ATP left that Mafuyu circles. The reasoning is long and complicated so she'll just remember "mitochondria = ATP" and use that for all questions.

She'll probably defer to Kaz like this for the rest of the homework, her reading the question out loud and Kaz doing all the thinking for her while she circles whatever answer is left over... but they get through it, fast forward thirty questions and two hours later. She cannot, in fact, get partial credit on the paper, and who knows if there are any ice cream places open this late anymore, but they got through it...! ]

[ Oh, Mafuyu... if you learned only that ATP is the thing mitochondria use then that's a win in Kaz's book. He's patient and attentive with her, working through each answer in a way he hopes she understands. He doesn't even notice how long it's been until they put the homework away and he looks at the clock. It's definitely way later than they intended and they should probably be putting Mafuyu to sleep, but they promised her ice cream and Kaz was really looking forward to it too. ]

Crap, it's late... We can always buy some pints of Ben & Jerry's at the convenience store down the street.

[ BUT IT'S OKAY. Mafuyu will still steal a bite of each and then dig into her salmonella cookie dough ice cream. ]

makes this face the entire time they walk, I don't know when I will ever get to use such a genuinely sad and disappointed icon but now they have to deal with it. ]

[ N-no, Mafuyu.... not the face... Kiryu's ultimate weakness is the suffering of children. HE'S SO WEAK!! By the time they get to the convenience store he can't take it anymore. ]
