[ Mafuyu opens her mouth, about to say no, because she doesn't want to do homework here, but Kaz had been helping her with it that morning and it's much better doing it together than by herself. Especially since it's coming to the end of the school year, and she needs ever extra point she can get. ]
Let's see if I remembered to bring any of it with me...
[ Because she doesn't really have a folder or anything to put it in. Turning her backpack upside down, loose papers fall out, crumpled where they'd been jostled around on her back. There's some homework! That was due this morning. It's the homework she consulted Kaz on, the first answer filled out, and answered incorrectly. ]
Oh! Here's one! I think I can still get partial credit for it!
[ Kiryu breathes the smallest sigh of relief. He's actually been meaning to help Mafuyu with her homework, she's just hard to convince half the time. ]
Do you want me to get you some folders for all of these, Mafuyu...?
[ What are your parents even giving you, girl. Kiryu steps over to try and help her organize those papers. Sure enough, the one she found says it's past due... but it is something to do together. That means it can still be a date thing, right? ]
[ majima can't really judge, his backpack definitely looked like this, except he didn't have parents to buy him folders to solve this problem. please let kiryu help you, small child.
majima peers over kiryu's shoulder to look at the past due paper - of course - and the questions. ]
I don't need a folder- they're heavy. The book is heavy too. I think I left it at Takumi's.
[ Teaching Mafuyu is apparently a community effort, with her books and notes scattered among more responsible parties. And now it's their turn. Digging around one of the zipper pockets in her backpack, she produces a pencil— it's snapped in half, but the point is still there, only lightly dulled from unuse.
The pencil, and the paper, she hands over. ]
It's science class. You guys learned this, right? What's number two?
[ Kiryu shakes his head. He shouldn't be surprised... He's also going to have to get Takumi's number somehow and see if he can track down this book. Being a parent is hard! ]
We wouldn't be helping you study if we answer them for you. Why don't you read it out loud and we can eliminate the wrong answers like last time?
[ Which is to say, your offerings have been denied, Mafuyu. Kiryu turns to Majima, answering the question she artfully dodged. ]
I think it's biology. The first question was about cells and that kind of thing.
If I know the answer, I can work backwards and figure out why it's the answer. That's like studying!
[ There has to be some secondhand knowledge absorbed through copying people's homework or she wouldn't have made it all the way to her sophomore year. Believe in her!!! ]
Sometimes I go to Takumi's place to eat— his family has this sushi restaurant— and he teaches me a little. It's easier if I just leave stuff there.
[ She gets food! And her work done! It'd be win-win but her parents are paying Takumi for tutoring, they're somewhat responsible okay... ]
You could also know the answer if you did the reading...
[ But also this sounds like fair logic to Kiryu, who is 100% gullible and pure. He still hands her the paper and pencil. She's going to have to fill these out herself. ]
The answer to the first one, it's wrong. Viruses can't multiply without infecting a cell. They're not alive.
[ and they kind of not really went on a date there....and that date was just the two of them but they didnt know they were dating and now that they are and its real..........
now mafuyu is here. ]
You should try an' read, though. You don't want to get summer classes, remember?
[ It all comes around full circle. They should just order pizza and have a good time and not do homework... Mafuyu knows that's not going to happen, so she frowns down again at her paper. ]
If viruses can infect stuff, then they're alive. Anyways, I already answered number one, going backwards just wastes time! Reading wastes time too— people can explain it faster and better! At the rate it takes to do homework like that, it might as well be summer school anyways!
Viruses need to infect things to multiply. Bacteria and other cells can do it on their own. That's the biggest difference.
[ How to make learning fun... Well, Kaz sure doesn't know because he always found the readings to be cool and interesting. But then he's a huge nerd. ]
Studying now won't be as bad as studying over the summer. [ He sighs. ] What's the next question?
Yeah, it's... think about like this: if ya do it now, an' ya learn it now, it'll be faster all the other times.
[ but here he's going to try and nudge them all into sitting down at the table or something so they can work together like a cute little family. ]
I used ta hate doin' homework, I get it. But my brother, he always tried to get me to do it by givin' me somethin' I wanted, if I did. So maybe... [ hmmm ] How 'bout this, we do it and if ya work all the way through this paper an' actually really work on it, Kazzy an' me will take ya out for ice cream after.
[ If anything, she studies even less during summer school than regular school, because motivation then is entirely nonexistent. Ice cream, though, has her perking up immediately, straightening out the paper with renewed vigor. ]
Deal! Number two: "Which component of blood is directly responsible for transporting oxygen to body cells? A. plasma, B. platelets, C. red blood cells, D. white blood cells."
[ She goes ahead and circles D. ]
Alright, next one. Number three: "Some cell types contain thousands of mitochondria. These cells are likely to use large amounts of which of the following? A. ATP, B. carbon dioxide, C. DNA, D. nitrogen"...
[ Majima, if you don't know either, don't gang up on her!!! ]
Uh.
[ "The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" is probably going to be the only thing she takes away from high school science, but knowing the phrase doesn't mean she knows what it means. Her pencil hovers above A for a moment, slides down to B... C? ]
This is a trick question, right? Don't cells need all this stuff to function?
[ it's okay guys, Kiryu still loves you even if you don't know that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. ]
Well, carbon dioxide and nitrogen aren't used by mitochondria. I don't think nitrogen is used in cells, and carbon dioxide is usually released by cells, it doesn't get used. That's why we get sick if we breathe in too much smoke.
[ He really is trying to explain it so she'll learn... ]
So your choices are DNA and ATP. DNA is kind of like... the instruction manual for the cell, so that leaves...?
[ honestly majima doesn't even know what a mitochondria is but guess what he's not in high school and he doesn't have to do this homework!! tough luck, mafuyu
anyways kiryu is leading her to the answer so hes just gonna let her try and give it.
please follow his logic, mafuyu. do your dads proud]
[ It's not so much logic as much as Kaz shoots down all other possible choices, so it's just ATP left that Mafuyu circles. The reasoning is long and complicated so she'll just remember "mitochondria = ATP" and use that for all questions.
She'll probably defer to Kaz like this for the rest of the homework, her reading the question out loud and Kaz doing all the thinking for her while she circles whatever answer is left over... but they get through it, fast forward thirty questions and two hours later. She cannot, in fact, get partial credit on the paper, and who knows if there are any ice cream places open this late anymore, but they got through it...! ]
[ Oh, Mafuyu... if you learned only that ATP is the thing mitochondria use then that's a win in Kaz's book. He's patient and attentive with her, working through each answer in a way he hopes she understands. He doesn't even notice how long it's been until they put the homework away and he looks at the clock. It's definitely way later than they intended and they should probably be putting Mafuyu to sleep, but they promised her ice cream and Kaz was really looking forward to it too. ]
Crap, it's late... We can always buy some pints of Ben & Jerry's at the convenience store down the street.
[ YES!!! Ice cream, here they come. Mafuyu leaves her papers right there on the table as she jumps to her feet, grabs her shoes and flings open the door. ]
[ It's close enough to an ice cream date that Kaz will take it. Their weird family outing can move to the convenience store as Kaz grabs his keys and makes his way out for them to follow. ]
Ok. Cookie dough, and I'll have Cherry Garcia. What flavor do you want, Majima?

Uh, Mafuyu... the white blood cells are the ones that fight infection.
[ She definitely doesn't go to class. Or watch The Magic Schoolbus like tiny Kaz did. Kiryu shakes his head, continuing on. ]
